“I have owned my business since 1984. My previous accountant retired and I really had no idea what to do. My late husband always handled this. I hired another accountant but that was a disaster. I am so happy I found Maris and Associates.”

Business return types and what owners report on Form 1040
Partnerships file Form 1065, S corporations file Form 1120-S, and C corporations file Form 1120. A sole owner reports on Schedule C inside the 1040.
For partnerships and S corporations, we prepare the business return first and issue each owner a Schedule K-1, the statement of that owner's share of business income. We then use each K-1 for the personal returns.
Business tax filing deadlines and the S corporation election
- March returns.
You file Form 1065 or Form 1120-S by the 15th day of the third month after the tax year ends. For a calendar year, that is March 15 or the next business day.
- April returns.
A C corporation files Form 1120 by the 15th day of the fourth month after its tax year ends.
- Extensions.
We file Form 7004 for an automatic extension of time to file, and you still pay the tax by the original date.
- Washington excise returns.
The Department of Revenue assigns you a monthly, quarterly or annual filing schedule for the business and occupation (B&O) tax, a tax on gross receipts, and sales tax.
- S corporation election.
You file Form 2553 to be taxed as an S corporation, during the prior tax year or within 2 months and 15 days after the new tax year begins.
- Reasonable salary.
The IRS expects an S corporation to pay a shareholder who works in the business reasonable compensation before distributions.

How we set fees for business returns, bookkeeping and payroll
We price each service from its own factors:
Business return.Your entity type and annual revenue.
Bookkeeping. How many accounts we reconcile and how many transactions they carry.
Payroll.Your headcount.
A sole owner's Schedule C with the books already closed is the lightest case.
These are the factors, not a quote. You approve each quote before we start, and we hold the price for the work we listed.
